More Than a Good Story The Science Behind Our Ingredients

More Than a Good Story The Science Behind Our Ingredients

When the Data Goes Deeper

The ingredient market is full of good stories. A new mechanism. A promising application. A formulation designed to address a growing consumer need.

The harder question is always the same: What does the research show?

At Specialty Enzymes & Probiotics, we’ve spent decades asking and answering that question. More than 71 research studies now support our portfolio, including clinical studies on metabolic, gut, digestive, joint, immune and pet health, as well as sports nutrition applications, and our branded spore-forming probiotics.

Research has taken SlimSEB™ from a novel sugar-to-fiber mechanism into clinical studies exploring cardiometabolic health, weight management, blood sugar and GLP-1 companion support.

Bactase Pet PB™ has been tested in actual dogs, with clinical trials examining plaque, gingivitis and bad breath.

Our work on postbiotics explores new ways to harness microbial science without relying on live-cell viability.

Now, we’re bringing the research to SupplySide Global 2026 as the show’s official probiotics sponsor.

SlimSEB™, our cardiometabolic powerhouse, and Bactase Pet PB™, our clinically studied pet oral care blend, are leading the way this year.

SlimSEB™

11 Studies, 8 Clinical Trials, Growing Body of Evidence

SlimSEB™ is a synbiotic blend of enzymes, probiotics and herbal extracts. A proprietary enzyme exclusive to SlimSEB™ converts dietary sugar into functional fiber during digestion, and the scientific evidence supporting the impact of this revolutionary blend just keeps mounting.*

Eleven completed and ongoing studies, including eight clinical trials, examine SlimSEB™ across cardiometabolic health, glycemic response and GLP-1 support.*

Cardiometabolic Trifecta

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial followed 87 overweight and obese adults for 84 days. Researchers evaluated SlimSEB™ across weight, blood sugar, cholesterol and inflammation markers.*

Results in the obese group after 84 days on SlimSEB™:*

  • 8 lb weight loss*
  • 6 cm reduction in waist circumference*
  • Average 1.29-point drop in HbA1c, (marker of long-term blood sugar)*
  • 15.9% reduction in total cholesterol*
  • 22.4% reduction in hsCRP (key inflammation marker)*
  • Zero adverse events*

Overweight adults improved too, with 5.3 lb of weight loss, 4.7 cm off the waist and 14% lower total cholesterol. They also experienced zero adverse events.*

The results point to broad metabolic support across weight, blood sugar, cholesterol and a healthy response to inflammation.*

GLP-1 Companion Support

A 60-day published clinical trial assessed SlimSEB™ in adults stabilized on GLP-1s, examining gastrointestinal symptoms, quality-of-life measures and body composition.*

On average, participants experienced:

  • 27% decrease in abdominal pain*
  • 26% reduction in constipation*
  • 21% decrease in indigestion*
  • Statistically significant gains in bodily pain, social functioning, energy & vitality scores*
  • Greater reductions in body fat, BMI & waist circumference than on GLP-1s alone*
  • Zero adverse events*

The findings strengthen the case for SlimSEB™ in GLP-1 companion formulations, with benefits observed across GI symptoms, quality of life and body composition.*

Blood Sugar Support from Two Angles

Four studies, including three clinical trials and an in vitro study, demonstrate SlimSEB™’s support for healthy blood sugar levels.*

Findings include:

  • 16.9% average decrease in glucose AUC (Area Under the Curve) after meals, with no significant change in insulin
  • 36 mg/dL average reduction in blood glucose*
  • 4.7 mg/dL average decrease in fasting blood sugar levels*
  • 19.4% reduction in available simple sugars after a standardized meal*

Together, the findings show consistent support for healthy blood sugar levels across both laboratory and human clinical studies.*

Take a closer look at the blood sugar research behind SlimSEB™!

Eleven studies. Eight clinical trials. One ingredient designed to support metabolic health from every angle.*

As the evidence for SlimSEB™ continues to grow, so does its case as a standout choice for your next formulation.

Bactase Pet PB™

Real Dogs, Real Data

Clinical trials on live animals are expensive, time-consuming and require specialized protocols, which means rigorous research on companion animals is rare.

But with our commitment to science and research, we took the road less traveled. Bactase Pet PB™ is backed by not just one, but three studies – two clinical trials and one in vitro.

Study #1 | Corrective Oral Care

A rare dirty mouth 30-day, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial evaluated Bactase Pet PB™ in 27 client-owned dogs. Researchers measured plaque, gingivitis, bad breath and oral bacterial load.

Results showed:

  • Up to 67% reduction in plaque, gingivitis & bad breath*
  • Significant decrease in oral bacterial count*
  • Zero adverse events*

Study #2 | Symptom Recurrence

A second clinical trial went further, looking at whether Bactase Pet PB™ extends the benefits of professional cleaning.

29 dogs supplemented for 30 days post-cleaning showed significantly less (nearly zero) symptom recurrence of oral health symptoms across the board, including:

  • Gingivitis*
  • Plaque coverage & thickness*
  • Calculus deposits*
  • Bad breath*

Study #3 | Bacterial Growth & Biofilm Formation

An in vitro study evaluated Bactase Pet PB™ against Streptococcus mutans, a pathogen known to cause cavities and form biofilms.

The study demonstrated:

  • 36% decrease in biofilm formation*
  • Inhibition of bacterial growth*

For formulators developing the next generation of pet oral care, having clinical data from actual dogs makes a real difference in supporting pet health claims.

Postbiotics

Going Beyond Live Cultures

Formulators have traditionally focused on probiotics, which contain live microorganisms. Postbiotics offer another path to delivering microbial benefits without depending on live-cell viability.

A postbiotic is “a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host”, as defined by the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP).

It’s a distinction that matters. A product doesn’t earn postbiotic status merely by losing viability over time. The inactivated microbial preparation must be deliberately produced, characterized and supported by evidence for its intended benefit.

Postbiotic preparations can retain biologically relevant microbial structures, including cell wall constituents, membrane lipids, peptidoglycans and teichoic acids, along with fermentation metabolites where present.*

Interaction with host and gut-immune signaling pathways may follow, helping to explain the category’s pull toward gut-barrier, digestive, weight-management, immune, cognitive and skin-health applications.*

Why Formulators Are Paying Attention

One of the biggest advantages of postbiotics is also one of the simplest: postbiotics do not need to remain alive.

Live microorganisms can face challenges during processing, storage and distribution. Postbiotic preparations do not depend on microbial viability, creating more opportunities for formats such as:

  • Gummies
  • Heat-processed foods & beverages
  • Powders
  • Ambient-stable supplements

For formulators, postbiotics can offer greater flexibility in popular lifestyle formats, reduced dependence on refrigeration and more consistent delivery of the end product.*

Our powerful line of clinically backed CoreSEB™ postbiotics delivers support across:

Metabolic Health

  • Metabolic support*
  • Weight management*
  • Lipid metabolism*
  • Glucose management*
